[Unit 1] METHODS OF INVESTIGATING -1
Start point –
I ALWAYS PASS THIS ROAD when I go to the office for my part-time job. This road is making improvements to water pumps. And I can see the all construction through the window in my office. All of my co-workers in the office are talking about how noisy they are, when this construction will be done, and how hard to go to the office (because there is no crosswalk). I thought here is the place where I’m talking a lot with people.
Every 3 days a week, I can hear, see, and observe this road. So I chose this road – named YORK WAY.
Method 1 : Photographing –
On 28 September, I started to investigate the place closely and in detail to capture the moments of YORK WAY.
And then, I started to capture the different views depending on the time through my office window.
From 29 September Morning to 30 September Afternoon –
And I also found many changes depending on the time left by people. Like this trash can with trash.
Method 2 : Mapping –
At first, I attached photography on the map to understand more of this space.
And I found the spot many things are going on in this road.
Also found a touch point people are waiting for to cross the road.
From 29 Sep, I started to draw a map of every construction that I could see.
Once I draw the map with a pencil,
And then started to draw the route normally people moved.
The blue line is for pedestrians / and the Red line is for cars(bikes). They move randomly in this space. There are no accurate rules and signs for moving. Different routes were intertwined and people/cars/bikes watched each other more carefully so as not to make an accident.
Method 3 : Audio Recording –
When I opened the window of the office,
When I closed the window of the office,
When I walked to the office,
And then, When I just sat on the bench in front of construction.
IRONICALLY when I heard only the noise of construction that I recorded, It was not bad compared to what I heard in the office. Sometimes, the trembling sounds of machines feel like the bass sounds of music.
In the office, the sounds echo and deliver sounds inside, so It feels more noisy.
But in the street, we also can hear the sounds from the city loudly- like cars/people talking/bike chains- Mixed together.
Method 4 : Note taking –

I summarized the note-taking in below.
This space is tangled pavements, roadways and bike roads. When I arrived at this space for the first time, I was confused about how can I cross the road. There are a few people flustering. If they are not familiar with this space, that could be. My first time was the same with them. I was waiting a long time like a fool. But I’m still confused every day. People are standing randomly for crossing the road. To make matters worse, there are high constructions and noises, people can’t see or hear from cars. Even there is a bike station. People and bikes are crossing over the pavement and roadway, bike roads in this small and narrow and complicated roads. Cars are riding their own road too.
The truck blocked the bus stop. Buses also were not allowed to stop in front of the station. This place is like a mixed-food restaurant.
