[UNIT 1] METHODS OF CATALOGUING – OUTCOME

Through my previous research and feedback, I have realised that my focus has been on bridges as both connectors and conveyors of a neighbourhood’s essence. Bridges’ specific design symbolically showcases a neighbourhood’s unique character. My approach focused on how each neighbourhood is divided into its atmosphere. My goal is to approach these neighbourhoods with a fresh, foreign perspective, using re-framing, and re-contextualizing as tools to hidden new perspectives.

Taking on the perspective of a newcomer, I’ve been redefining my first impressions of each neighbourhood according to my own standards. As an example, when I looked at London, it struck me as a place with a rich tapestry of diversity, resembling a lively mosaic of cultures and people, rather than just a conventional cityscape.

I created a map of London based on zone 3, and this process led to a realization. Neighbourhoods are typically defined by their geographical locations and come with their communities, often characterized by factors like income, crime rates, and ethnic groups, ages.. – sometimes it is discrimination. Of course, these indicators also determine the atmosphere of the neighbourhood, sometimes.

As an outsider who is not privy to these specific data points, I didn’t categorize these neighbourhoods based on such metrics. Instead, I approached it from the perspective of a foreigner, relying on my feelings to simply assess and recontextualise the neighbourhood atmosphere as it appeared to me.

I divided the neighbourhoods I visited into six categories using just two adjectives. Then, I combined these categorized neighbourhoods, giving each a single city name.
These city names were crafted by blending existing city names.

I wanted to ensure that the neighbourhood names I chose would be free from language or historical associations, making them universally understandable and neutral.

I’ve also created unique typography that will be featured on the connecting bridges in each neighborhood I’ve established. These typographic designs visually represent the diverse concepts and atmospheres I’ve experienced within each neighborhood. Through this approach, I aim to offer a visual representation of the neighborhood’s unique character and the feelings it evokes.
